INTRODUCTION This document describes the SNMP Trap messages that are currently being sent by TIME/LAN network devices to a Network Management Station (NMS). The SNMP Trap messages are divided into 2 groups: generic and specific. Generic traps are those defined in RFC 1157. TIME/LAN network devices comply with the standard as well as providing additional information to further clarify the generic traps. Specific traps are used to identify events that are germane to TIME/LAN network devices. Here again, additional information is provided to clarify the specific traps. 2. GENERIC TRAPS An SNMP Trap message as defined in RFC 1157 contains a field named 'generic'. The value of this field indicates the type of generic trap. TIME/LAN network devices convey additional information through the 'variable binding list' (VBL). COLDSTART TRAP Cause: issued upon power-up or reset. Generic field: 0 VBL: NULL WARMSTART TRAP Cause: issued after a network device has reset due to some unrecoverable error condition. Generic field: 1 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' 2 Timeplex TIME/LAN 100 Enterprise-Specific Traps August 26, 1991 LINKDOWN TRAP Cause: issued after a network link interface has been declared down. Generic field: 2 VBL: MIB II variable 'ifIndex' LINKUP TRAP Cause: issued after a network link interface has been declared up. Generic field: 3 VBL: MIB II variable 'ifIndex' AUTHENTICATION FAILURE TRAP Cause: issued whenever SNMP receives an SNMP request message that is not from a valid NMS or has an invalid community name. Generic type: 4 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' EGP NEIGHBOR LOSS TRAP Cause: issued whenever EGP detects that one of his neighbors is no longer responding. Generic type: 5 VBL: MIB II variable 'egpNeighAddr' 3. SPECIFIC TRAPS The specific trap type is meaningful only when the generic trap type is SPECIFIC (=6). In other words, if an SNMP Trap message contains a 'generic' value of 6, them the 'specific' value identifies the specific trap type. The following defines the specific trap types: 3.1. FDDI Traps PC TRACE FDDI RESET Cause: issued when the FDDI interface is reset as part of the 'ring trace' recovery process. Specific field: 150 VBL: MIB II variable 'ifIndex' 3 Timeplex TIME/LAN 100 Enterprise-Specific Traps August 26, 1991 FDDI SCM STATE CHANGE TRAP Cause: issued when a station wraps or unwraps. Specific field: 151 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1fddiSMTDasScmState' FDDI UPSTREAM NEIGHBOR CHANGE TRAP Cause: issued when a station detects a new upstream neighbor has been connected to the ring. Specific field: 152 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1fddiSMTStationUpstreamNeighbor FDDI DOWNSTREAM NEIGHBOR CHANGE TRAP Cause: issued when a station detects that a new downstream neighbor has been connected to the ring. Specific field: 153 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1fddiSMTStationDownstreamNeighbor FDDI CONNECT REJECTED TRAP Cause: issued when the station PHY rejects a neighbor PHY connection. Specific field: 154 VBL: MIB II variable 'ifIndex', TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' DUPLICATE MAC ADDRESS Cause: issued when a station detects that another station on the ring has the same physical(MAC) address as the this issuing station. Specific field: 155 VBL: MIB II variable 'ifIndex' UNA DUPLICATE MAC ADDRESS Cause: issued when this station's upstream neighbor station detects that it has a duplicate MAC address. Specific field: 156 VBL: MIB II variable 'ifIndex' FDDI TWISTED RING Cause: issued when a station detects that its PHY A/B is connected to a matching PHY A/B causing the ring to twist back on itself. Specific field: 157 VBL: MIB II variable 'ifIndex' 4 Timeplex TIME/LAN 100 Enterprise-Specific Traps August 26, 1991 SLAVE LINK ERROR TRAP Cause: issued when a concentrator detects that one of its slave links has exceeded its CRC error rate threshold. Specific field: 158 VBL: MIB II variable 'ifIndex', TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' LEM PORT ALARM Cause: issued when the bit error rate exceeds an alarm threshold. Specific field: 159 VBL: MIB II variable 'ifIndex', TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' 3.2. OSPF Traps T1 IF CHANGE Cause: issued when OSPF detects the state of a router interface has changed which will result in new link state advertisements. Specific field: 190 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' T2 NBR CHANGE Cause: issued when OSPF detects the state of a neighbor has changed. Specific field: 191 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' T3 DR CHANGE Cause: issued when OSPF detects that the (Backup) Dedicated Router has changed on one of the attached interfaces. Specific field: 192 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' T4 NEW LSA SENT Cause: issued when OSPF originates a new instantiation of a link state advertisement. Specific field: 193 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' 5 Timeplex TIME/LAN 100 Enterprise-Specific Traps August 26, 1991 T5 NEW LSA RECEIVED Cause: issued when OSPF detects the receipt of a new instantiation of a link state advertisement. Specific field: 194 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' T6 ROUTING TABLE CHANGE Cause: issued when OSPF detects that an entry in the routing table has changed. Specific field: 195 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' C1 PACKET HDR ERROR Cause: issued when OSPF discards an incoming packet due to an error in the IP/OSPF header. Specific field: 196 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' C2 HELLO PARM MISMATCH Cause: issued when OSPF discards an incoming Hello packet due to mismatches in the Hello's parameters and those configured for the receiving interface. Specific field: 197 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' C3 WRONG NBR STATE Cause: issued when OSPF discards an incomiong Database Description packet, Link State Request packet, Link State Acknowledgement packet, or Link State Update packet due to the source neighbor being in the wrong state. Specific field: 198 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' C4 DB DESCRIPT RXMIT Cause: issued when OSPF retransmits a Database Description packet. Specific field: 199 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' 6 Timeplex TIME/LAN 100 Enterprise-Specific Traps August 26, 1991 C5 UNKNOWN NBR Cause: issued when OSPF detects a nonbroadcast multi-access (NBMA) message from an unknown neighbor. Specific field: 200 VBL: TL1 MIB variable 'tl1snmpLastTrapMessage' E1 RCV LSA CHKSUM Cause: issued when OSPF detects a checksum error in a link state advertisement.
