CURRENT_MEETING_REPORT_ Reported by Bob Hinden/BBN Minutes of the IP over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM BOF) The meeting was organized as a BOF to determine if there was enough interest in forming an IETF Working Group to develop protocols to run IP over ATM networks. The meeting was attended by 64 people. The first half of the meeting was a presentation by Bob Hinden / BBN covering the reasons why the BOF was organized. The talk included: o Motivation for the IP over ATM Group o Why ATM in Interesting o Relationship to Other Standards Groups o Area for Work o Next Steps The second half of the meeting was a discussion of whether the group should be formed and if so what area the group should first focus on. The work areas discussed included: o ATM Internet Architecture o ATM and Internetwork Operation o Adaptation Layer Selection(s) o Flow Control / Congestion Avoidance o Flow Setup / Connection Establishment o IP Encapsulation o Multicast o Network Management o Physical Media o Security Other issues discussed include whether the group should initially develop standard protocols or experimental protocols. After much discussion the group decided that there was enough interest that a IETF Working Group should formed. There was also a consensus that the group initially develop experimental protocols. There was agreement on the following topics: o Approaches for Interoperability with the Internet (e.g. IP over ATM) o Develop a list of unknowns that need to be worked on. 1 o Set up a separate mailing list from the IPLPDN Working Group. o Identification of Architectural Alternatives to Internetworking over ATM. o That the work of this group not duplicate the work that is being done in other ATM standard groups. o Physical Layer Standards are very well covered in other standard groups and do not need to be addressed in this group. o There there should be communication to other ATM Standard Bodies. o To initially not work on Congestion Control issues. o The initial focus of the group should be a local with widearea internetworking. The Chairperson was tasked to revise the draft charter to be consistent with these agreements.
