NETWORK MANAGEMENT AREA Director: o Deirdre C. Kostick Area Summary reported by Deirdre C. Kostick, AT&T Bell Labs Nine active working groups, one BOF, and an Open Meeting were held in the Network Management Area during the Dallas IETF meeting. Agent Extensibility Working Group The goal of this Working Group is to define standards-track technology for SNMP Agent extensibility. The resulting technology specification will allow independently developed sub-agents to communicate with a master-agent running on an Internet device. The Agent Extensibility Working Group met twice in Dallas. The session started with a presentation by the Chair which provided on overview of the charter, a high-level description of the multiple component problem, and a review of relevant IETF publications. Several presentations were made on implementation experiences with packet-based and variable-based multiplexing. Application MIB Working Group The Application MIB Working Group is chartered to define objects for the monitoring and control of distributed applications. The Application MIB Working Group met twice in Dallas. The Working Group started with an overview of the charter and scope. Discussion topics included scope of the effort and relation to other MIBs. An Internet-Draft reflecting output of the meeting is planned for January 1996. ATM MIB Working Group (AToMMIB) The ATM MIB Working Group is chartered to evaluate RFC1695 (Proposed Standard) with respect to the standards track and to evaluate the need for additional objects for management of ATM services, Frame-based UNI, and ATM tests. In addition, the Working Group is evaluating the SONET/SDH MIB, RFC1595 (Proposed Standard). The Working Group discussed the SONET/SDH MIB, the ATM MIB, and the ATM Supplemental MIB. o SONET/SDH MIB (RFC1595). Three implementation reports were presented, indicating no significant implementation problems. o ATM MIB (RFC1695). All open issues were resolved. It was agreed that a revised RFC1695 needs to be compared with the Supplemental ATM MIB in order to ensure sensible grouping of objects in the respective documents. o Supplemental ATM MIB (Internet-Draft). It was agreed that the scope of the current Supplemental MIB should be restricted to UNI 3.1 (except in cases where UNI 4.0 work is already solid and straightforward). Entity MIB Working Group The goal of the Entity MIB Working Group is to define a set of standard objects for representing logical and physical entities and the relations between these entities. At the Dallas meeting, the Entity MIB Working Group reviewed its charter and schedule. The Working Group then discussed the current Entity MIB draft, including changes from the previous draft. HUBMIB Working Group The HUBMIB is currently reviewing RFC1515 and RFC11516. The HUB MIB Working Group discussed and approved suggested updates to their charter. The HUB MIB charter will be revised to include new multiple repeaters model support, the 100 Mb interfaces, and updates the IEEE/ISO standard references. Interfaces MIB (IFMIB) Working Group The Interfaces MIB Working Group is currently evaluating RFC1573 (Proposed Standard) with respect to the standards track. The Interfaces MIB Working Group reviewed the current Internet-Draft (draft-ietf-ifmib-mib-01.txt) and the current list of issues. ISDNMIB Working Group The ISDN MIB Working Group is chartered to identify objects for management of ISDN-type interfaces. The ISDN MIB Working Group reviewed the current list of open issues and reached consensus on closure for these issues. The ISDN MIB Working Group intends to produce a revised Internet-Draft in January, then call for last working group comments prior to submission to the NM Area Directorate for review. RAID MIB BOF Working Group The RAID MIB BOF included a review of current RAID and RAID management technology. Several RAID vendors attended and discussed their current proprietary MIB modules. The proposed scope and charter for design of a standard RAID MIB effort was discussed. TRUNK MIB Working Group The Trunk MIB Working Group is chartered to evaluate RFC1406 and RFC1407 for progression in the standards track. The Trunk MIB Working Group reviewed the current Internet-Drafts and issues list. The Working Group is planning on having revised drafts issued in January, 1996 and final drafts ready for IESG review in February, 1996. Uninterruptible Power Supply MIB Working Group (UPSMIB) The UPSMIB Working Group is preparing a recommendation on the advancement of the UPS MIB (RFC1628) from Proposed Standard to Draft Standard. Several implementation reports were given at the meeting. NM Area Open Meeting Deirdre Kostick, NM Area Director, gave a status report for the NM Area. The open discussion portion of the session focused on the status of the SNMPv2 documents. At the time of the meeting, the IESG had not yet voted on the set of SNMPv2 documents.
